Rx

Finally got my towels off the loom, here they are pinned and ready to hem.

I have yet to figure out why my headache is worse in the mornings and in the evenings.
By noonish today though, it was letting up enough to let me do some work.

The porch over at the studio was pretty disgusting after the winter, so I got busy.

The floor could use one more mopping, and the furniture on the far end of the porch has to go out to the barn, but otherwise, it looks a lot better.

Somebody doesn't want me to leave.

But I had a date with Roy.

We walk on the bike path between the canal and the river almost every day.

But one of our walks is along this path, on another part of the river.

We didn't see anyone else down here, it was just blissfully quiet.

Sometimes, that is just what the doctor ordered.
Or would order, if he had half a brain.

Crazy as a LOOM

Ah, Saturday.

Acupuncture yesterday.
Doable day today.
Maybe I should just do acupuncture three times a week, every week.

I spent the day at the studio, just me and the cats.   I had a lot to do.
Yesterday,  we moved the Toika.  Yes, we did.  It took four of us......me, Lois, Tammy, and Claire.
We just had to be smarter than the loom, and we decided that we were.

“There is nothing, nothing, nothing, that two women cannot do before noon.”

Which means, basically, that moving a 7 foot wide loom was pretty much cake for us.

It just had to be taken apart in a certain order, and put back together the same way.  And it is big, and very heavy.

Syd Supervisor is sneaking up on the left.

I call this the 'rose room'.  It's plenty big enough.

The Toika is fine in its new home.  More than fine......it's perfect.

We do have to put the harnesses on and tie everything back up.  I thought that we could keep them all straight while moving them, but that proved to be a mistake.
But all in all, I am very pleased.
This bedroom is on the front of the house, has lots of lovely light, and is a perfect place for the Toika.

In the old dining room, where the Toika USED to live, we now have room for the Reed Ideal that we just rescued.
Here it is, in pieces.

Claire has the incredible talent of being able to implement my schemes.   I can dream up some pretty wild stuff, but I am not always capable of making these ideas come to life, especially if it involves carpentry.
But Claire can.
Here is the Reed Ideal with its brand new production wheel, made by Claire.  This beam will hold 750 yards of warp, which is going on SOON.

Oh, heart be still, isn't she a beauty??

Yes, you too, Syd.

So today,  I cleaned the loom.  It was dry and soaked up  a LOT of my Feed-n-Wax.  It also needed nuts put on the bottom bolts, which required me to put something under the loom to raise it up enough for me to get my fingers under it.  I also made new cords for the treadles.

Strangely enough, I had these strips of canvas with grommets in them, lying in a drawer, perfect for tying onto the warp beam.

This big wheel spins so freely, you would never know how heavy it is.

I lashed a new rod onto the front.

The wood gleams.  I swear I heard this old loom sigh.

Brand new shiny heddles.

And the part that made me the happiest........suggested to me by the cute little clerk at the hardware store who is young enough to be my son.......(when did THAT happen?)

A lawn mower pull, cord and all, for the brake release, which was missing. Total cost: $3.99

Here she is.......ready to get to work.  There are 252 rolls of off white poly cotton rug warp waiting.

I told you I was crazy.
NOW do you believe me???
No????
Well, for all you weavers out there....I threaded this for pinwheels, but when I started weaving it, I realized that I had last done M's and O's on this loom, so the treadles were tied up for that, and not pinwheels.
So I don't know what you call it, but I kind of like it, so I'm going to let it fly.

Strawberry Fields Finish!

You may remember my "Strawberry Fields" quilt - the pattern found in Sarah Fielke and Kathy Doughty's book Material Obsession. It's finished!!

The fabric is Anna Maria Horner's Loulouthi line - one of my all-time favorites. This quilt is a bit of a stray for me, but I love it's Bohemian scrappiness. I just want to cuddle up with it :)

The quilting is a combination of machine and hand-quilting with pearl cotton.

The binding is the zig-zag stripe from Loulouthi.

The back a combination of 3 prints.

Hope you all have a great weekend - You'll find me cuddling ...Cindy

A.M. rant

It is nearly 7 months now that I have had a constant, 24/7 headache.  It seems impossible to be true.   But it is, and wishing it weren't so doesn't really help.
So I try not to go there.
Sometimes people say things like, "I don't know how you do it."
Well, that's easy.  I have no choice.
I suppose I could curl up in a ball someplace, but lying on the couch watching Jerry Springer really isn't an option.  I am not a fan of daytime TV, and lying down usually does not improve my head pain one tiny bit.
And to be honest, even kicking back in my own living room to get through bad days is not an option that makes any sense, because my mother's TV in the back of the house, is a dull roar that drives me fairly insane.
So, no, that's not a plan of action.
Keeping going is the only thing that works for me.  Acting 'as if' everything is ok.  Sometimes I just move a whole lot slower than usual for me, and I get a whole lot less done.  And I squint.  Probably making permanent furrows in my brow, which honestly, doesn't bother me one freaking bit at this point.
And I ask L a LOT, 'did I do this already?'

Trouble is, the rest of my body feels pretty good.  I have no other big complaints.  So trust me when I say that having this headache mess with my life on a continual basis makes me pretty angry at times.  Angry and frustrated.
It would be easier, somehow, I think, if I knew WHY I was having this headache.
After months of MRI's, CAT scans, lab work, doctor's appointments, injections, etc, I still have no real answer, or at least nothing that makes any sense.
The probable answer is that I have a 'new daily persistent headache'.....yup, that's a diagnosis.  And the reasons for it are many, and the treatment for it is obscure and sketchy.  According to everything I read, it is likely to last 3-5 years.  That would really suck, to lose  the quality of these good years to a headache.  Because you know I'm not getting any younger.
Oh, yes, I try to tell myself that it could be worse, that so many other people have much worse medical issues to deal with.  And that works, to an extent.
But the pain between and behind my eyes is sometimes so intense, that any reasonable argument is lost, no matter how hard I try to accept it as the truth.
I get up every morning, with HH in tow, I prepare for the day.  Sometimes early, like today, I sit on the couch with my cuppa tea, and tears come unbidden.   Necessary you might say.
And always, I try to plan my day, create an agenda, purpose, distraction.  And luckily, the studio is a busy place with lots of things that need to be done to pay the bills and make it work, so there is no lack of content to fill my hours.
That's how I do it.  Somewhat desperately, at times.
Last week, the acupuncture seemed to help.  This week, HH rages on unaffected by needles stuck in my body, oblivious to my despair.   Bastard.
You can only imagine how I hate HH.
And how intent I am on living my life in spite of him.  It's a "he".......how could it be otherwise???  I couldn't blame this on one of my own.
My one wish would be that there would be ONE doctor who would take this mystery on, who would orchestrate what I did next, what test, what procedure, what treatment I tried.  Call him a lead investigator......that's what I want.
But of course, that doesn't happen.  You go to your GP, he does what he does.  It doesn't help.  Then you are left to decide what you would like to try next.   I have 30 years of nursing experience, which may or may not make any damn difference at all.  What do lay people do, I ask you??   With no background at all?   I'll tell you.......they are fair game for our medical system.   That's what.

I have been asked if I would consider that maybe it is Chiari after all.  And my answer to that is this:
One doctor said he thought it was Chiari.  Two neurologists and one neurosurgeon said that was bull, and not even to be considered.  Then there is the fact that I have had this all my life, why now?  And why two months after my head injury?
And then there is the simple fact that if someone said it was Chiari, there is not much chance that I would ever agree to the surgery that fixes it.  I have researched it along the way, and it is just too risky and too traumatic.  I can function now, and after that surgery, maybe not so much.

Now that I have unloaded my grief and frustration on you, and probably bored you to tears, let me just say this.......I am so grateful that you listen, that you comment, that you support me on this roller coaster ride with HH.  It does mean a lot to me, it really does.

Sometimes it feels that I always have someone to talk to about it, even now, at 7am, on a rainy Friday morning.
Thanks, for being out there.

Surprise

Life isn't always smooth, is it?

You can think you have it all figured out, have all your ducks in a row, then a big wind comes along, and it's not as clear as you thought.

Kind of like the breeze that blew across the water, disturbing a perfect image of the trees along the bank.
Such is life.

And then there are the unforeseen problems.....blips on the screen, so to speak.
Like having your tail end up in a cuppa tea, while lounging in your box, minding your own business.

You think everything is all calm and simple, and then the circus comes to town.

Ah, life, always full of surprises.

And all we can do is take it one day at a time, and wear protective gear.

Maybe that is why I love weaving so much.  It is everything all lined up.  It is so structured, and perfect.

Thank goodness something is.

Hold on.

Sometimes when I know I have a late day planned, like today, I get my lazy butt out and walk Roy first thing in the morning.
I love the dam.
Sometimes, it roars, sometimes there is no water over it at all, but today the water was just softly coming over the top.
I love the sound of it.

Walking Roy has become an integral part of my day.

If I sound breathless, it is because Roy likes to walk "fast".
Brat.

All photos today were taken with my Iphone.  It was easy, and HH ruled.

At the studio, we got right to work.  We have a couple of orders, and we have a lot of 'moving' planned.

We shuffled some things around in the shop/retail area.

The Cranbrook is the only loom allowed in the retail area.......cause she's pretty.

Even though we don't get a ton of street traffic, our store has to look good.

L was busy weaving a 'twice wove' order.  Kind of like  a twice baked potato.   You'll have to ask her about that.
And I was doing some  pretty boring, repetitive stuff.  Try to contain yourself, I know this is pretty riveting stuff.

Cats and work. Not together.

Even though I still have a daily headache, I can tell that it doesn't have the grip on me that it did.
How do I know??
I'm more productive, my brain is working, coming up with new ideas.   I start things and finish them without wandering around aimlessly in between.
Oh, I'm not 100%, I know that.
But I'm better.  For the first time, really, since mid October.
I don't exactly understand it, but so far, it seems that acupuncture is having a positive effect on me.

There were more hijinks at the studio.
Blame it on L, who decided that Kizzy and Sydney needed to be weighed.
Jinksie is a lightweight, and Miss Puss would take your hand off, so she is exempt.

I swear I heard Sydney saying: "What the he**?"

"I can't look."

"This is ridiculous.  You need to buy a new scale."

OK, back to work.

Had an order from a previous customer......I made her 2 very colorful rugs, each 5'x7'.
She wanted a 3'x5' and two 2'x 3' rugs to go with them.

I finished them today.

a

See someone sleeping in the chair?
Yes the porch is a mess.  It's on my list.

Breakfast eaten, now for a little nap.

I just assumed it was Next, until I happened to glance over at the OTHER chair,  and recognized Next by his clipped ear.
The kitty on the red cushion is 'Nuff.
We have gotten them both neutered, and they both eat on the porch.   We think they are brothers, and now that their hormones are under control, they don't fight anymore.
Guess they have figured out that they are safe here.  Next knows he gets love here, but 'Nuff isn't ready for that yet.
 But he may come around.

We may find them a home, a good one, and if not, well.........you know.
